Hulu series nominated for 2025's Critics' Choice Awards
Two heavy hitters represent the streamer in the drama category: FX/Hulu's Shogun and the second season of the espionage thriller The Old Man. The former is an adaptation of James Claville's epic novel series, which captures the historical workings of feudal Japan. In addition to being nominated for Best Drama Series, Shogun has coveted acting nominations for five of its actors.
Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai - who made history with their Emmy wins this year - are both up for Best Actor and Actress in a Drama Series. In Supporting Actor, Tadanobu Asano and Takehiro Hira have been recognized. Moeka Hoshi, who played Usami Fuji, is the lone nomination in the Supporting Actress category.
The Old Man boasts leads Jeff Bridges and John Lithgow in Actor and Supporting Actor, respectively. The two play former colleagues on a dangerous mission to rescue Bridges' daughter from a tyrant in the Middle East.
In the comedy category, FX/Hulu has multiple series seeking to best for the award that was previously given to fellow Hulu comedy, The Bear. In its absence this year, Hulu has the freshman series English Teacher, the fourth season of Only Murders in the Building, and the final season of horror-comedy What We Do in the Shadows.
What’s new on Hulu this month: Releases, exclusives, and can’t-miss shows
English Teacher premiered late this year but found a niche audience with its heartfelt adult humor. From creator and lead Brian Jordan Alvarez, the show follows a gay English high school teacher trying his best to teach more than what's being graded. The show scored Alvarez a Best Actor nom and Stephanie Koenig for Supporting Actress.
The second contender, Only Murders in the Building, has awarded comedy icons Steve Martin and Martin Short both nominations for Best Actor. This season of the comical murder caper found our amateur sleuths departing the East Coast for Hollywood. Despite an A-list cast, they are the only performers nominated from the series.
Rounding out the comedy category is What We Do in the Shadows, spooking up lead performer nominations for Kayuan Novak and Natasia Demetriou. Meanwhile, Harvey Guillen scores a supporting actor nom. The off-beat series details the hilarious lives of modern-day vampires. Based on an indie film, the show has accumulated a devoted following.
Elsewhere, Hulu/FX series were selected in the Limited Series, Foreign Language, and Best Comedy Special categories. The Holocaust dramatization We Were the Lucky Ones is up for Best Limited Series and a supporting actor nomination for Logan Lerman. FX's second season of Feud has Tom Hollander and Naomi Watts up for lead performers, while the late Treat Williams is posthumously nominated for supporting actor.
La Maquina, the boxing drama starring Diego Luna and Gael Garcia Bernal, secured a Foreign Language Series nomination, and Jim Gaffigan: The Skinny scored the sole Hulu nomination for Best Comedy Special.
Take time to stream these series before the awards are handed out live on Sunday, January 12, on E! Chelsea Handler will host the ceremony from Santa Monica's Barker Hanger.
