Jeff Bridges’ powerful journey: Overcoming cancer to bring The Old Man to life
By Ed Malaker
Jeff Bridges' role in The Old Man stands out not only for its gripping story of a retired CIA operative facing his past but also for the real-life health challenges he had to overcome while bringing the character to life. His work on the series stands as a testament to how far some actors will go for their craft.
Jeff Bridges struggled with cancer during production
Just after taking on the role of Dan Chase, a retired CIA operative facing his past, Bridges was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. His type of cancer affects the lymphatic system, resulting in symptoms that can include chronically swollen lymph nodes, fatigue, sweating, weight loss, and more.
At the time, Bridges was filming intense scenes, including fight sequences, unaware of the full impact the illness was having on his body. He would later share that he had a 9-by-12-inch tumor in his stomach during these scenes but said the growth was strangely painless and that it felt surreal that he was unaware of it.
Jeff Bridges struggled with COVID-19 during production
While Bridges was receiving chemotherapy for the cancer, he contracted COVID-19 and later described it as being even more challenging than cancer. With his immune system weakened by the chemotherapy, the illness took a severe toll on him. He recalled feeling utterly depleted, calling it one of the hardest battles of his life.
Production on The Old Man was put on hold during this period, and the dealy created a gap of nearly two years before he could return to the set. This hardship also deepened his understanding of his character, as Dan Chase himself confronts his mortality and struggles to overcome his past.
Resuming The Old Man with renewed strength
After months of treatment and recovery, Bridges finally returned to the set of The Old Man, ready to continue with his career in remission. His experience with illness provided a unique perspective on many of the show's themes, allowing Bridges and his character, Dan Chase, to share the journey in a way that comes through on screen.
Reflecting on his experience, Bridges said that returning to work and seeing the same crew was like returning from a long weekend. His co-star John Lithgow praised Bridges for his perseverance, calling his resilience and cam approach inspiring.
Jeff Bridges's story is a powerful example of triumph over adversity, and his performance is a reminder that real-life challenges can enrich the characters we bring to life.
