Why What We Do in the Shadows is ending after Season 6

Since its beginning in 2019, What We Do in the Shadows has been a fan-favorite comedy series that combines supernatural elements with witty humor and eccentric characters. It’s based on the 2014 mockumentary film of the same name by Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi and follows a group of vampires living in Staten Island. However, with the sixth season announced as its last, fans are wondering: why is What We Do in the Shadows ending?

A natural conclusion

The main reason that the show is ending is that the story is about to reach its natural conclusion. The characters have undergone significant character development throughout the show, and the sixth season will likely bring the arcs to a satisfying end, setting up the characters for a new adventure beyond the confines of the show.

For instance, executive producer Paul Simms has hinted that Guillermo will attempt to live a more “normal” life in the final season, even taking up a job in a financial firm. This development signals a major narrative shift, making it an ideal moment for the show to conclude.

Exploring new themes and final conflicts

In its final season, What We Do in the Shadows will also tackle larger themes such as capitalism, class struggles, and the mental health of its characters. Nadja and Laszlo, a couple who have maintained their love for each other throughout the series, will face marital challenges due to a forgotten feud brought back to life by a long-dormant vampire roommate named Jerry.

Laszlo will also dive deeper into his scientific pursuits, continuing his work with Colin Robinson in their lab. The producers have teased that these character arcs will be rich in comedic moments while highlighting how their lives are changing beyond the confines of the show.

Going out on a high note

The decision to end What We Do in the Shadows after six seasons also stems from a desire to conclude the show while it’s still at the top of its game and fans are interested in seeing more. Critics have continuously praised the show for its fresh and unique approach to comedy. While it has received multiple Emmy nominations, including for Outstanding Comedy Series, the creators want to leave audiences with a strong, satisfying finale.

As we bid farewell to the eccentric vampires of Staten Island, it’s clear that What We Do in the Shadows will leave a lasting legacy as one of the most original and beloved comedies in recent memory.
