Why rewatching Wolverine before Deadpool vs. Wolverine on Disney+ is essential

With Deadpool vs. Wolverine finally arriving on Disney+, I was pretty excited to see it after missing it on the big screen since I loved the first two movies despite knowing very little about the X-Men. However, in the first scene, he mentions not changing Logan’s events, which I haven’t seen in quite a while. One thing led to another, and I found myself rewatching the trilogy. These are some of the things I noticed.

Wolverine’s emotional depth

One of the first things I was surprised by when rewatching the trilogy is Logan’s emotional depth, throughout. For example, in The Wolverine, we see his vulnerability as he grapples with loss and the weariness of outliving everyone he loves. This emotional depth adds gravity to his conflicts and shows that he is more than just a brawler. It is important to keep this emotional depth in mind when he pairs with characters like Deadpool.

This emotional resonance also made Logan a standout. The gritty portrayal of a world-weary Logan, struggling with the burdens of his past and his mortality, brings his humanity to the surface.

Combat evolution

As you watch the Wolverine films, you witness Logan’s fighting style evolve. From feral, rage-filled attacks in X-Men Origins: Wolverine to the disciplined, samurai-inspired techniques in The Wolverine, it’s clear his combat skills have sharpened over time, though he can still rage out from time to time when he gets really angry. By Logan, his movements are less about finesse and more about sheer survival.

In Deadpool vs. Wolverine, this evolution could play a key role in how the movie plays out and how he interacts with Deadpool.

Themes of redemption and identity

A central theme in Wolverine’s story arc is his search for redemption. X-Men Origins: Wolverine explores his past and his struggle to control his violent tendencies. In The Wolverine, Logan confronts his guilt and isolation, stepping into the role of protector before finally becoming a hero at peace with himself in Logan.

These themes show us that Wolverine has a moral compass, even when shrouded in darkness. In contrast, Deadpool thrives on blurring ethical lines, making their team-up sure to be fun.

Other Observations

• With the theme of trying to get rid of his powers but finding people along his path need help reminded me a lot of the old Incredible Hulk television show.

• The CGI looks silly at times but generally held up well over the years.

• While it was a pleasure to watch the trilogy, I felt like I missed a lot by not seeing the other X-Man movies, especially with regard to Charles. I probably would have enjoyed it more, especially Logan, had I seen the others as well.
