ABC has officially announced that The Conners will be back for another season. Read on for more details.

It doesn’t come as a surprise but ABC has announced that The Conners would indeed be receiving a second season renewal. The move was expected after the first season—without Barr—turned out to be a huge success. Not only that but Laurie Metcalf’s amazing performance in the season finale definitely gave the studio a good reason to keep the story going.

Metcalf’s character wound up in a bit of a crisis at the end but it was done so eloquently by the actress that fans are dying to know what happens next. Thankfully, a confirmed season renewal assures us that Metcalf will be back to explore this character further.

On top of coming back for a sophomore season, details in the report from Deadline suggest that the sitcom will receive an expanded episode order. Season one was set to conclude with ten episodes but received an additional order towards the midway point of the season. Only one more was added but that season finale set up a few important cliffhangers.

For one, David (Johnny Galecki) proposed that he and Darlene (Sara Gilbert) get their family back together. David’s proposal came almost immediately after Ben (Jay R. Ferguson) invited Darlene and the kids to move in with him. Darlene decided not to move away with Ben but that doesn’t mean she’s reconciled with David though.

Secondly, Becky (Lecy Goranson) had to face the reality of losing yet another important person in her life: Emilio. She only just recently came around to the idea of having a child with him but Emilio has been deported. This won’t be easy for Becky to handle, especially with a baby on the way.

As far as the returning cast goes, all the mainstays are expected to reprise their roles. Metcalf, Gilbert, Goranson, Goodman, and Ames McNamara are supposed to return as series regulars. Michael Fishman, who plays D.J. on The Conners, is expected to appear in some episodes but not all of them.

Fishman’s reduced role likely implies that Maya Lynne Robinson and Jayden Rey won’t be around as much either since they’re family. Of course, that aspect is still up for debate.

Aside from confirmed returns, the big casting announcement we’re waiting for is either Ferguson or Galecki. Depending on who is announced first, it may point to who Darlene chooses to stay with. She reassured Ben that their long-distance relationship would work in the finale but who knows if it will.
