Add it to your watch list: Before Longlegs, Maika Monroe starred in awesome thriller Watcher
Actress Maika Monroe has been receiving well-earned attention and acclaim this year with the release of Oz Perkins' Longlegs, the twisty crime thriller following the titular serial killer. Monroe plays an FBI agent with a sixth sense who helps find the culprit. If you've been following the star for a while now, you know she's no stranger to the horror genre. Arguably her most popular movie before Longlegs was David Robert Mitchell's modern-day cult classic It Follows which came out in 2014. These two are still not the only horror titles in her filmography, and one of her more underrated movies is worth the watch, streaming right now on Hulu.
Monroe plays the leading role in Chloe Okuno's 2022 psychological thriller Watcher, following a couple who move into a new apartment in Bucharest, Romania, only to discover someone watching them. Julia (Monroe) becomes obsessed with a potential stalker in the building across the street, believing he could be a local serial killer who's been all over the media. The film tells a story of a cat-and-mouse game, though half the time, you don't know if it's actually just in Julia's head or really happening.
Alongside Monroe, Watcher also stars Karl Glusman, Mădălina Anea, Burn Gorman, Cristina Deleanu, and Daniel Nuță. The movie does a great job getting under your skin with unsettling scenes, making you question if you (and Julia) are just being paranoid or not.
Watcher is one of Maika Monroe's best movies to date
Monroe is a certified scream queen at this point, and Watcher is a great addition to her horror filmography. Out of all of her movies and shows, it's definitely one of her best, and it really showcases her versatile talent. There's not a ton of action throughout the bulk of Watcher's runtime, meaning the viewer really relies on the suspense and Monroe's strong performance to stay engaged. The film is pretty simple, and every moment holds purpose, making each scene very effective.
Watch the trailer for Watcher below if you want to take a closer glimpse at what it's all about:
Watcher is rated R, so it's definitely not for kids. That said, if horror movies turn you off with a lot of violence and gore, you'll be safe with this one. While there are bloody and disturbing images, it's pretty brief. As I mentioned, this is a psychological thriller, so the creepiness is more in the suspense and Julia's mental space as she believes someone is watching her. So, if you're looking for something eerie to watch this spooky season but don't want hardcore horror, I recommend trying Watcher. There are a few jump scenes, but ultimately, the scares are moderate.
