Is Only Murders in the Building Ending After Season 4?

Only Murders in the Building is a hugely popular show that has had us all transfixed since the first episode. Now, as we near the end of the fourth season, some are starting to wonder if this is it. Luckily, it isn't. Keep reading to find out everything we know.

The current season count

For four seasons, Only Murders in the Building has kept us at the edge of our seats. There are plenty of twists and turns that keep us guessing the killer’s identity until the very end. There are also plenty of laughs and heartfelt moments that helped create the show’s large audience. But with each season adding layers to the characters and the overarching storyline, how long can the show continue?

Hints from the creators

Series creators Steve Martin, John Hoffman, and Dan Fogelman have teased that the show’s future depends largely on the ongoing story arcs and fan response. While there’s been no official confirmation of an end date, Martin has mentioned in interviews that Only Murders in the Building is a limited series with a finite number of seasons. However, just two episodes into the fourth season, Hulu picked it up for a fifth.

That's right! Hulu has picked up the show for a fifth season!

Where could the story go next?

Each season has taken place in the Arconia, but the show dropped some hints about expanding that universe, as characters spend more time at other locations, especially Mable.

Steve Martin’s future in the series

One factor that could play into the show’s duration is Steve Martin himself. At 79, Martin has hinted that he may be winding down his acting career, though he remains actively involved in the series. Martin Short is also getting old enough to retire at 74.

Critical and fan reception

As mentioned, the show has built up quite a following over the four seasons that can be hard to walk away from. However, if the show experiences a drop in viewership or critical acclaim, the creators may opt to conclude the series on a high note rather than risk overstaying its welcome.

Will there be a spin-off series for Only Murders in the Building?

There hasn’t been an official announcement of a spin-off yet, but Season 4 introduces new characters who might start their own podcast in a spin-off. Mabel could also move to a new location, leading to a new team of crime solvers in a potential spin-off.

Are there any other TV series that similarly expanded their universe?

Yes, many successful shows have expanded their universes. For example, Breaking Bad led to Better Call Saul, and The Walking Dead spun off into several shows. If Only Murders in the Building follows a similar path, it could introduce new characters and settings while keeping the mystery-solving formula intact.
