Huluween is back for another spooky season on Hulu (Get the full lineup)
By Carla Davis
Huluween is back for another round of fun/frightening movies and series! Hulu always adds great horror content for our October viewing, and this year is no exception; we can look forward to another season of FX’s American Horror Stories, Halloween-themed animated series, and Hulu original films and series.
Huluween actually began on Sept. 26, when the highly anticipated FX series Grotesquerie began streaming the next day on Hulu (also Disney+ for Bundle subscribers). Ryan Murphy (American Horror Story), Jon Robin Baitz, and Joe Baken created the series, and Niecy Nash-Betts, Lesley Manville, Courtney B. Vance, and Travis Kelce star.
In the new show, Detective Lois Tryon investigates disturbing crimes in a small community. When she seeks the assistance of Sister Megan, they end up tangled in a mystery that is harder to solve than Lois expected.
Huluween film favorites already streaming include:
- Immaculate
- Us
- The First Omen
- Smile
And here’s what’s coming to Hulu in October:
October 1:
Barbarian – One of my personal favorite “WTF” horror movies, Barbarian stars Justin Long, Georgina Campbell and Bill Skarsgard. A young woman books an Airbnb for an out-of-town job interview and discovers that the house has been double-booked. It’s best you discover this bonkers story for yourself, so that’s all of the plotline I am willing to divulge.
The Fly – This 1986 horror film will go down in history as one of the slimiest movies in existence. Jeff Goldblum is Seth Brundle, an eccentric scientist who has been experimenting with teleportation. But something goes horribly wrong, and he ends up fused with a common housefly, causing him to experience some really yucky mutations.
The Purge – In a dystopian future, the US has dedicated one night per year to “The Purge.” During this violent annual event, citizens are allowed to commit any crimes (even murder) without consequence. The wealthy buy expensive security systems to protect their families, but the poor, middle-class, and homeless have to survive the night on their own…with no emergency services available.
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter – Produced by Tim Burton, this horror-action mashup imagines Abraham Lincoln as – you guessed it – a hunter of vampires. When he was a young boy, Abe’s mother was killed by a plantation owner, and as an adult, he seeks revenge, only to discover that the plantation owner is a vampire.
It’s a Wonderful Knife – One would think Winnie Carruthers’ life would be fantastic after she literally saves her entire town from a killer on Christmas Eve. But her best friend was murdered by the killer, dubbed “The Angel”, and everyone else has moved on a year later, while Winnie is still grieving and traumatized. When Winnie wishes she had never been born and returns to a town where no one recognizes her – and The Angel is still committing murders.
M. Night Shyamalan Collection – This collection features some of Shyamalan’s best films, including The Sixth Sense, Signs, The Happening, and Unbreakable.
October 3:
Hold Your Breath – Set in the Oklahoma panhandle in 1933, this Hulu Original stars Sarah Paulson (American Horror Story, Ratched) as Margaret, whose husband is currently working out of state. Having recently lost one of her daughters, Margaret is trying her best to care for her other two, while battling grief and frequent dust storms. Things get worse when rumors of a local murderer start to spread, and a stranger appears.
October 7:
Solar Opposites special Halloween episode – “Spooky stuff is afoot when the Spirit of Halloween starts to take over Korvo’s life in this special edition of Solar Opposites.”
October 11:
Mr. Crocket – It’s 1993, and the mysterious Mr. Crocket somehow emerges from his children’s television show, abducting children and murdering their parents. But one mother fights back to rescue her kidnapped son and destroy the demonic Crocket.
October 14:
Family Guy special Halloween episode – “Peter and his friends aim to unseat the reigning champion (Glen Powell) in Quahog’s annual Pumpkin Contest by any means necessary.”
October 15:
FX’s American Horror Stories – The anthology series returns for its fourth season just in time for Halloween. This season will include actors such as Henry Winkler, Micahel Imperioli, Debby Ryan, Dyllon Burnside, Jeff Hiller, Angel Bismark Curiel, Jessica Barden, Guy Burnet, Victor Garber, and June Squibb.
October 17:
Reginald the Vampire (complete second season) – The final season of the Syfy series Reginald the Vampire stars Jacob Batalon as Reginald, a young man whose life changed drastically when he became a vampire.
October 19:
Late Night with the Devil – It’s Halloween of 1977, and Jack Delroy’s late-night talk show Night Owls is broadcasting live. It’s a special Halloween-themed episode featuring a psychic, a young girl who is supposedly possessed, and her psychologist. As you might guess, everything goes horribly awry.
October 21:
Carved – Billed as a horror-comedy, this Hulu original, Carved is about a group of teens who become trapped on Halloween night in a historical reenactment village. The group is being stalked by a vengeful pumpkin creature.
October 22:
FX’s What We Do in the Shadows (final season) – “In the sixth and final season of the Emmy-nominated comedy, Nandor, Nadja, Laszlo, Colin, and Guillermo will enter the workforce, visit New Hampshire, go to a human dinner party, fête The Baron and conjure a demon — all while trying to find their place and their purpose in this crazy, mixed-up world.”
All in all, it looks like Huluween is going to be pretty great this year.
