Jeremy Allen White has emerged as one of the top acctors of our generation having poular roles in both television and film. From his unforgettable role as Lip Gallagher in Shameless to his award-winning turn as Carmy in The Bear he has been in some of the most memorable scenes of the past 20 years and he shows no signs of slowing down.
Before he was stealing scenes on TV, White was a dancer. As a kid growing up in Brooklyn’s Carroll Gardens, he trained in ballet, jazz, and tap. But when he hit 13, he started to get involved with acting and changed direction. He ended up attending the Professional Performing Arts School in Manhattan, where he honed his craft and set the stage (literally) for his future.
In 2011, he was fresh out of school and won the role that made him a household name, portyaying Phillip “Lip” Gallagher in Shameless. While he had already been acting for several years in films that include Beautiful Ohio and Aquarium, and even small parts in Law & Order, Shameless allowed him the perfect format to develop his skills and showcase his extensive talents as he played the character for 10 seasons.
But when the show wrapped after 134 episodes, White found himself in a bit of an identity crisis. He later admitted that he felt lost, unsure of what was next for him. It turns out that the next thing would be just as huge.
In 2022, White took on the role of Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto, a brilliant but troubled chef trying to save his family’s Chicago sandwich shop. The show was an instant hit, thanks to its realistic portrayal of the culinary business, making it relatable to anyone who has ever worked in the field at any level.
To prepare for the role, he and co-star Ayo Edebiri actually took culinary classes, so yes, he can chop an onion like a pro.
What’s new on Hulu this month: Releases, exclusives, and can’t-miss shows
His work on The Bear has earned him a Critics’ Choice Television Award, and three consecutive Golden Globe wins, while his signature white T-shirt and messy curls have made him an unexpected style icon.
In January 2024, White went from cooking up Michelin-star dishes on screen to heating up billboards as the face of Calvin Klein. His black-and-white campaign photos took the internet by storm, proving that he can make even a simple pair of boxer briefs look cinematic.
If you thought White was done taking bold roles, think again. He’s set to play none other than Bruce Springsteen in the upcoming biopic Deliver Me from Nowhere.
