Hulu’s The Great was a big hit with fans. It captivated audiences with its unique blend of satire, historical drama, and modern sensibilities. It first got started in 2020 and quickly developed a loyal fanbase for fans who enjoyed its unconventional storytelling.
However, despite its widespread acclaim and passionate following, The Great was unexpectedly canceled after three seasons. But why does the show remain popular, and what’s next for its talented cast?
Unlike traditional historical dramas, The Great doesn’t worry about sticking too closely to historical facts and even uses the tagline “an occasionally true story.” Not aiming for accuracy allows for more creative freedom, which the writers use to the fullest to present a hilarious take on Catherine the Great’s rise to power in 18th-century Russia. The anachronistic dialogue and satirical tone set it apart from other period dramas, making history feel alive and relatable.
Tony McNamara, the writer behind The Favourite, fills the show with witty dialogue and dark humor that often walks the line of absurdity.
Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult’s performances are a big part of why the show became so popular. Fanning portrayed Catherine with a perfect balance of ambition, vulnerability, and wit, while Hoult’s portrayal of the unpredictable and often ridiculous Peter III was both hilarious and surprisingly endearing. Their onscreen chemistry really brings each scene to life.
The Great is also a visual masterpiece. From its extravagant period costumes to its stunning set designs, the show immerses audiences in a richly detailed world.
Throughout its three-season run, The Great earned critical acclaim and multiple award nominations. It also consistently performed well with audiences, with demand in its final month being 8.4 times higher than the average TV series in the U.S.
Unfortunately, despite its popularity and strong reviews, Hulu surprised everyone by canceling The Great after its third season in August 2023. Hulu didn’t provide a clear reason, but some insiders blame high production costs and lower viewership numbers.
The cancellation was especially shocking given the show’s dedicated fanbase and critical success. Many fans expected at least one more season to conclude Catherine’s story, making the abrupt ending feel unfinished.
Although The Great may not return for another season, the show carved out a unique space in historical fiction, proving that period dramas don’t have to be dry or overly serious to be engaging and informative.
