As the holiday season gets underway, Hulu has been busy expanding its festive lineup with many great Christmas movies. Now, they have added one of the true all-time classics, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.
This 1989 comedy, starring Chevy Chase as Clark Griswold, has been capturing the hearts of audiences for decades as they watch the Grizwalds try to have the perfect Christmas but face nothing but one chaotic mishap after another. From a disastrous Christmas tree hunt to wild family antics, every scene delivers a dose of nostalgia and laughter.
Why Christmas Vacation is a holiday must-watch
Few films capture the highs and lows of the holiday season as perfectly as Christmas Vacation. It masterfully blends slapstick comedy with heartfelt moments and keeps a strong focus on family no matter how crazy things get. Chevy Chase’s performance as Clark Griswold, combined with a talented supporting cast, brings to life the relatable frustrations and joys of hosting the holidays at your home and having the family over.
It’s often one of the movies discussed when talking about the greatest Christmas movies of all time, and it has inspired many quotes and memes that help keep it popular year after year. For many, watching the Griswold family’s hilarious misadventures has become as much a part of the season as decorating the tree or baking cookies.
Interesting move facts
- The movie uses “Christmas ’59,” a short story by John Hughes published in the December 1980 issue of National Lampoon magazine, as the foundation for the film’s storyline.
- Initially, Chris Columbus was set to direct the film but stepped down due to creative differences with Chevy Chase. John Hughes then offered Columbus the script for “Home Alone,” which also became a massive success.
- The Griswold family’s house is part of the Warner Bros. backlot in Burbank, California. Interestingly, Clark Griswold’s childhood home, seen in old home movies, is the same house as in the TV series Bewitched.
- Randy Quaid, who portrayed Cousin Eddie, improvised some of his character’s oddities. For instance, the clicking noises he makes with his tongue are not part of the script but something spontaneous he did to enhance his eccentric character.
The ultimate guide to the best shows and movies on Hulu right now
- In the scene where Clark punches the Santa Claus decorations in the front yard, Chevy Chase actually breaks his pinky finger. Despite the injury, he continued the scene without interruption and quickly switched to kicking items around the yard instead. This scene made it into the final movie.
- In one scene, Clark and Eddie are drinking egg nogs out of Wally World mugs, which are likely the memories they brought home from their visit to Wally World during National Lampoons Vacation (1983).
