2024's best Hulu horror movies: from iconic franchises to fresh nightmares

One of the most common things that I hear many horror fans say is that they just don’t make movies the way they used to. Maybe it’s because we are getting used to the gore, maybe it’s because people seem to lean on technology too much, and maybe they really were better. However, I think after watching these next films, all of which are available on Hulu, you’ll agree there are still some great films getting made.

Alien Romulus

Alien: Romulus, directed by Fede Álvarez, is the latest installment in the iconic sci-fi horror franchise. Set between the events of Alien (1979) and Aliens (1986), it follows a group of young space colonizers who, while scavenging a derelict space station, encounter the universe’s most relentless predator—the Xenomorph.

It’s scarier than the last few films, and it feels like a return to what made the franchise popular in the first place, and there are a few real surprises.

Handling the Undead

Handling the Undead is a Norwegian drama with horror elements that explores themes of grief, loss, and the inexplicable. It follows three families in Oslo confronted with the sudden reawakening of their deceased loved ones. It dives into their emotional stories to discuss the complexities of human relationships and the mysteries of life after death.

The film features performances by Renate Reinsve as Anna, Anders Danielsen Lie as David, and Bahar Pars as Eva.

Cellphone

Cellphone is a 2024 suspense thriller directed by Luke Sommer that follows Wynne, portrayed by Whitney Rose Pynn, who, while grieving the death of her fiancé, begins receiving disturbing images on her cellphone that seem to predict her future.

For viewers interested in psychological thrillers that explore themes of grief and premonition, Cellphone is the story for you.

The Stranger

The Stranger is a suspenseful thriller that follows a rideshare driver in Los Angeles who picks up a passenger named Carl. What begins as a routine ride quickly escalates into a harrowing 12-hour struggle for survival as Clare realizes that Carl is not who he appears to be.

Originally released as a series on the short-lived platform Quibi in 2020, the filmmaker re-edited The Stranger into a feature-length film for Hulu.

Sting

Sting centers on 12-year-old Charlotte, who secretly raises a spider that rapidly transforms into a giant, flesh-eating monster, forcing her to fight for her family’s survival. This film really pays homage to older monster movies while still staying modern.

If you like creature features with a blend of suspense and dark humor, Sting offers an entertaining experience.
