Today’s episode of Fear The Walking Dead turned out to be one of the most explosive ever, beating its’ companion series to the punch with a groundbreaking event. Continue reading for more details on how.

In the midseason premiere of Fear The Walking Dead, Morgan (Lennie James) and the others continued their search for survivors in need of help. They’ve been focused on this mission for a majority of Season 5 and now they’re actually finding people and communities who need them.

During one of their scouting missions, Morgan overhears a distress call from a woman named Tess. She tells Morgan that her husband went out to find medication for their son but never returned. Morgan — being the hero that he is — rushes to her side not long after.

The problem, however, is that Tess is surrounded by a minefield. Tess’ husband protected them by planting landmines in the field around their house but it winds up placing them in unnecessary danger — this presents a major obstacle for Morgan and the others.

What’s interesting is that landmines haven’t been used in The Walking Dead universe before. TWD has utilized every manner of weapon imaginable in some manner, except for landmines. These explosives aren’t especially important but their appearance provided fans with a look at something TWD hasn’t done before. It also led to some of Fear The Walking Dead’s best dialogue so far.

By now, fans familiar with John Dorie (Garret Dillahunt) know the gunslinger possesses his own style of speaking. John uses common English but he throws in random phrases with dual meanings, most of which require further explanation.

One of the latest incidents featured John calling the landmine situation “some of the ugliest mustard he’s ever seen,”. Officer Dorie goes on to explain that the saying was one coined by his grandfather which can be summed up to ‘a dangerous situation ending badly’.

The good news is that their mission is successful and the dilemma is resolved without any unnecessary casualties. Just keep in mind that the presence of landmines could persist throughout the back half of Season 5. Who knows, Sarah (Mo Collins) or Daniel (Ruben Blades) might go back and try to recuperate the untriggered landmines — they would be useful against Logan and his marauders.
