Veronica Mars Season 4 took Hulu viewers and Marshmallows by storm a few weeks ago with eager fans quickly binging through the entire season. Although, many were devastated by a major character’s untimely demise.

By now, you should know there are going to be heavy spoilers about Veronica Mars Season 4 in the following article. So if you haven’t caught the finale yet, now’s a good time to stop reading.

Warning! Spoilers ahead.

At the very end of Veronica Mars fourth season, Veronica and Logan Echolls officially tie the knot. They begin preparing for their honeymoon when Logan steps outside to grab something from their car. Veronica is still piecing together the bomber’s plan when she realizes what’s about to happen. But before she can react, the car explodes and kills Logan.

What’s intriguing is that rather than ending on a somber note, the show’s writers decided to flash forward a year in time to a partially grieving Veronica. She’s not devastated but the seasoned investigator has some issues to work out, evidenced by her trip to a therapist.

Ending aside, Logan dying has caused a massive uproar among fans which makes us wonder if the writers will retcon his death. Fan criticisms could change things but our guess is Rob Thomas has definitively decided on Logan’s departure from the show.

Rob Thomas, the creator of the series, reportedly decided to kill Logan before they even pitched the Veronica Mars revival to Hulu. His thought process was that they couldn’t continue the show if Veronica had a love interest waiting in the wings. Thomas couldn’t think of any mystery shows where the lead had a stable love interest so neither could his. He thought there would be a better chance of continuing Veronica’s story if she were alone instead of being in a romantic relationship.

Additionally, Bell too has defended the death of Logan mentioning that there wouldn’t be a show without some sort of inner-conflict for Veronica to deal with. Right now, it’s the death of her beloved.

Many fans disagree with Thomas and Bell seeing as how Logan Echolls was a dynamic character in many of Veronica’s stories. He’s also come a long way from the version we were introduced to in Season 1.

Fans hated Logan at first, and then he began to evolve, changing those assumptions. And with his character evolution, we began to root for him. Then in the Veronica Mars movie, we finally see a somewhat functional, respectful Logan emerge. The movie also ended happily with Logan and Veronica riding off together.

At the beginning of Season 4, Logan and Veronica are still together but they’re dealing with some deeper issues. It’s nothing that can’t be repaired, evidenced by Veronica’s acceptance of Logan’s marriage proposal.

In the end, they have a small, intimate marriage ceremony and are excited to plan their honeymoon when they get home. But their happy ending comes to an abrupt halt when Logan dies.

Telling women they can’t be phenomenal detectives unless they are miserably single is not a great message. Both Thomas and Bell sound convinced that there is no story if Veronica is happy. But good storytelling should allow for Veronica to be in a relationship.

Nothing is stopping Veronica from being a badass detective, even if she’s married. Fans have also complained about the writers being more interested in the mystery aspect of the show rather than their own characters — which to some degree — is a correct assumption.

Viewers suggested that the writers could have sent Logan off on a top-secret military mission instead of killing him off, though that scenario would’ve resulted in the same outcome of Veronica being romantically attached to someone.

Nevertheless, fan outrage continues to grow as more people finish watching Season 4. Thomas and Bell stand behind the decision to kill off Logan so it doesn’t look like they will retcon his death anytime soon. Of course, fans can continue to imagine Logan didn’t die by skipping the last ten minutes of the finale but where’s the fun in that.

Do you think the writers should retcon Logan’s death? Why or why not? Leave us your thoughts in the comments below!
