The season six finale of Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD seemingly set our favorite team of heroes on a new adventure but this is undoubtedly their last ride. The question is: How will the series come to a close?

Based on what we witnessed in the season six finale, Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD is going to wrap with a story which takes place mostly in the 1930s. This time and setting are important for several reasons, especially considering its pre-Infinity Saga status.

Since the MCU’s main arc began with Captain America’s journeys in WWII and progressed from that point on, Agents of SHIELD venturing further back in time expands upon the MCU’s existing history. Plenty of noteworthy events took place before the modernized world came into existence, the pace just didn’t pick up until the Infinity Stones began making an impact on Earth’s chronology.

Dates aside, the season six finale also set the main S.H.I.E.L.D. team up for more interpersonal conflicts with some starting developments in their separate character arcs.

As we mentioned above, the team landed in 1931 thanks to a swift rescue by Gemma (Elisabeth Henstridge). She pulled them from the temple which Izel (Karolina Wydra) intended to use for resurrecting her fallen brethren before it was destroyed. Her plan failed but the Chronicom Hunters soon found the site to be a liability, more so now because they’ve decided to establish Chronica 3 on Earth.

Because of that, Fitz (Iain De Castecker) sends Gemma and the others to another pivotal time targeted by the Chronicoms, 1931. It’s unclear why Fitz sends them to this particular year but the date must hold some significance. Perhaps we’ll witness the beginnings of S.H.I.E.L.D. before the founding members even contemplated such a wild concept.

On the other hand, Fitz and the Chronicoms could have a mission entirely unrelated to SHIELD’s history. The other thing we mentioned was that more pivotal events in Earth’s history happened before the Infinity Stones made a bang. Therefore, it’s quite feasible for there to be an unexplored chapter in the MCU’s timeline.

In addition to the stage where SHIELD’s final battle will go down at, the finale also shook up the main lineup of SHIELD Agents once again. Nothing major is happening but there’s going to be some changes come time for Season Seven.

For one, fans are going to be introduced to a new version of Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg). Gemma created an LMD with Chronicom software during her time away and he’s just been awakened. Mind you that his artificial mind has been briefed on the events which transpired while he was gone so it’ll be like the team never lost Coulson.

What’s of most interest are the complicated emotions Coulson will feel upon learning that his friends resurrected him once again. Coulson was devastated the first time he found out he died — imagine his reaction to learning he died again and was then replaced by an LMD/Chronicom hybrid.

On top of a newly resurrected Coulson, there’s also the matter of Agent May (Ming-Na Wen) in cryostasis. Gemma spoke about repairing the damage to her body but she has to remain in cryogenic stasis until she’s at the correct core temperature.

The particulars of how Gemma intends to resurrect May haven’t been disclosed which could be troublesome. The team is now in possession of some new tech but if Gemma’s method even remotely resembles TAHITI, May might be driven insane by the process alone.

While those two characters are in grave danger, there’s someone who needs to be checked on when Season Seven rolls around: Yo-Yo (Natalia Cordova). She became infected by one of the Shrike during the last few moments of “New Life” but was saved when May killed Izel. Yo-Yo coughed up a black sludge following the banishment, indicating a purge of the parasitic creature.

What we don’t know is if the Shrike left anything inside of Yo-Yo. She may require a procedure if the bat-like creature is still embedded in her sternum. Gemma presumably has equipment capable of extracting the Shrike but such a procedure is risky under any circumstances. Keep in mind that Yo-Yo could just as easily make a full recovery.

All in all, season seven seems like it’ll send our favorite team of heroes off the way they should. There’s no telling how Jed Whedon and the show’s executive producers intend to do that, but if we look at the success of past seasons, it should meet fans’ expectations and then some.
