St. Louis Union Station has a dark blot in its long interesting history. The station was the location of the infamous Union Station massacre that occurred on June 17, 1933, giving reason to why Zak Bagans and the Ghost Adventures’ crew investigate the site.

During what appeared to be a botched rescue attempt, four law enforcement officers and their prisoner were killed. It is rumored that it is these poor souls that are haunting the St. Louis Union Station. Said incidents are why Zak Bagans and the Ghost Adventures’ crew chose to investigate.

The massacre came about when an infamous criminal by the name of Frank Nash was incarcerated at Ft. Leavenworth prison. He was convicted of three separate crimes of murder, armed robbery, and assault.

After serving six years from his third sentence, Nash escaped from Ft. Leavenworth in 1930. Three years later, the police chief and two agents from the future Federal Bureau of Investigation finally apprehended him once again. Ten days later, exiting off the train at Union Station, three thugs thought to be Nash’s friends opened fire and when the shooting stopped…Nash was dead by his own people along with four officers of the law.

Although Nash was killed outside the station, Bagans mentioned that the station was built from marble, the energy from those deaths could have soaked into the marble. Since Union Station is made from that same marble inside, theoretically that energy could move inside the station, causing the sightings claimed by eye-witnesses.

Spooky Geology, an online article states that the problem with this theory is that it is untested. The “Stone Tape Theory” as it is known among scientists, is a popular concept among paranormal investigators to explain appearances and sounds that do not interact directly with humans. Supposedly, the stones act as a movie or recording. It is often termed ‘residual haunting’. The premise is that quartz or limestone captures emotional energy from a traumatic event.

Marble isn’t even one of the stones mentioned and even if it was, these geological materials raise interesting questions. How is the energy recorded into the material? What energy gets recorded and what energy doesn’t? How is that determined? Plus, how does it get played back? In other words, how is the spiritual energy released?

Now it is interesting to note that in some investigations, it does seem that property with deposits of quartz and limestone do seem to have a higher than usual paranormal activity. But, again…how does the energy of the quartz and limestone effect paranormal activity? What is the relationship between the activity and rocks?

Numerous eyewitnesses working at the station have seen spirits. One cleaning lady while cleaning windows first saw a pair of aged black shoes, but when she looked up from her cleaning saw that the shoes were empty. Just a pair of black shoes were there. Naturally, that freaked her out. A security guard walking through the train-room saw a female apparition dressed in black before she too just disappeared.

During the interview, it was discovered that the train-room was once a waiting room for immigrants. It was thought then that maybe the woman was an immigrant in the late 1890s before the station became a train station. Except, the guard when teased by Bagans mentioned the lady had nice legs. Period clothes didn’t reveal legs until the 1920’s almost thirty years after the immigration room was closed.

The station stays open until midnight, so the crew decided to explore the upper three floors that were closed and completely enclosed so ambient noise wouldn’t contaminate their findings. There were numerous personal experiences and a few paranormal instances where the EMF meter registered a change in the electromagnetic field on the floor being investigated. The ghost box also captured a few words indicating the ghost adventures crew was interacting with an intelligent entity.

Once, the human activity died down in the station at midnight, the crew resumed their investigation in the station. After capturing some intriguing evidence in the upper floors, there was nothing else in the station. There was a purplish anomaly on the wall near where the shoes were reported earlier by an employee, but that was it. The anomaly disappeared shortly later. There was some movement near the exit doors, that looked like ghostly figures were walking past, but Bagans learned later that two employees stayed late doing inventory. Their duties required them to walk past that same door numerous times which debunked the collected evidence.

Nevertheless, Union Station has a long interesting history and because of that history, the city of St. Louis has renovated the station adding restaurants, a hotel, and stores to make it a more permanent part of the city’s history. Now the station can be used visited and enjoyed by everyone.

The Ghost Adventures crew captured some intriguing evidence, but none of that evidence seems to be connected to the massacre. Which could mean, that the energy wasn’t soaked into the building itself as originally thought because the victims were killed outside the station? Or the energy of all the people that have since visited the station erased that energy. The spirits that have been seen seem to be part of a later era after the massacre and we may never know their story, but for now, they seem to be harmlessly enjoying the station and the people who visit it.
