On The Handmaid’s Tale, Nick Blaine has had somewhat of a complex story-arc. Though his latest actions seem to suggests he’s been working for the Republic of Gilead this whole time. Will he be exposed as a spy in Season 3?

If you’ve seen the latest episode of The Handmaid’s Tale then you know that June (Elizabeth Moss) learned a startling truth about Nick Blaine (Max Minghella) and it may change everything going forward.

In “Household”, June learns that Nick used to work as a spy for Gilead. Many citizens of the United States resorted to accepting whatever occupations available and June knew Nick did as well. What she didn’t know was Nick fought as a soldier in the Crusade. He was commended as a fierce soldier who helped Sons of Jacob assume control of the country.

Serena Waterford (Yvonne Strahovski) winds up being the one to informs June of Nick’s past transgressions, which can be summed up best by Serena’s final line where she says “if it weren’t for Nick, we wouldn’t be here”. This more than implies that Gilead’s rise came about thanks in part to Mr. Blaine’s contributions.

The revelation itself shocks June to the core because she accepted Nick as her lover. She believed him to be a just and honorable man, but knowing that Nick helped establish Gilead, June is left dumbstruck. Not only that, but she’s been face-to-face countless times with a man who’s partly responsible for her horrendous predicament.

In any case, Nick’s current capacity as an informant for Gilead is what we’re most concerned with. There’s no telling if he’s still under their employ but considering the Swiss mediator’s distinct hesitation to even speak with Nick, that may be a telltale sign of where his allegiances lie.

While the jury is still out on Nick — so to speak — the following episode may provide more insight into what he’s done, as well as what he intends to do. Nick hasn’t said anything of current goals, though seeing him command a patrol of soldiers gives us the impression that he’s still under The Eyes’ employ.
