Marvel’s Cloak And Dagger: Does Andre have a comic counterpart?

Marvel’s Cloak And Dagger recently introduced a new villain to the series’ sophomore season: Andre. He doesn’t seem to have an identical comic counterpart but could he be based on an existing character?

In last week’s episode of Cloak And Dagger, Andre (Brooklyn McLinn) revealed himself to be an enhanced individual affected by the Roxxon explosion—the same one that gave Tandy (Olivia Holt) and Tyrone (Aubrey Joseph) their abilities. He confirmed as much after dragging Tandy through a slew of manipulated dreams where he stole her “hope”.

The promo for this week’s episode entitled ‘Vikingtown Sound’ reveals that Andre used his special abilities to not only take Tandy’s hope but also her Lightforce powers. It depicts her trying to summon her abilities but to no avail. The scenes compiled into the trailer for Season 2, Episode 7 could be more dream sequences like last week’s but from the sound of Andre’s last comments, he’s done extracting the power he needed.

The question on our minds is whether or not Andre is based on a character from the comics. No one from the source material is named Andre Deschaine but his superhuman abilities could be the key to identifying him.

To sum it up precisely, Andre possesses abilities similar to Tandy Bowen’s Lightforce powers. She can use her Lightforce energy to access people’s minds and steal their hopes, but just for personal gratification. Andre, on the other hand, appears to be feeding on unassuming young girls as though it’s necessary for survival. Could he be some form of vampiric superhuman who feeds on others to stay alive?

While we’re fairly certain that Andre isn’t a vampire, there are a couple of Marvel characters who he could be personifications of. For one, Andre could be a retconned version of Cadaver aka Simon Longley.

In the comics, Cadaver has the ability to steal light and lifeforce from his victims. He hasn’t made too many appearances but after seeing Andre rob Tandy of her Lightforce energy, it’s probably a good indication that he’s sucking the life out of her. Andre does point out that he takes the will from all the girls he influences, which could be another deviation on his Cadaver abilities.

Apart from Cadaver, there’s also a distinct possibility that Andre Deschaine is a live-action adaptation of Predator. The comic version of this character, however, resides within Cloak’s shroud, sucking the life-force from anyone who winds up inside of the Darkforce Dimension.

As for Marvel’s Cloak And Dagger, the Predator could be channeled through Andre instead of Tyrone’s shadow. The two both drain the life-force from their victims—the only difference is that Predator seems to be a part of Andre instead of Ty.

Whatever the explanation is, Andre’s abilities will come into focus again in this week’s episode and we’ll more than likely see the extent of them. We’ve witnessed Andre stealing power from Tandy but nothing says it is permanent. Perhaps a strong enough reaction to stress will trigger Tandy’s Lightforce abilities again. Though, that aspect is still up for debate.
