While prior reports insisted that Marvel’s Cloak And Dagger exists within the MCU, their universe wasn’t impacted at all by Thanos’ action in Avengers: Infinity War or Avengers: Endgame. What could the reasoning be?

Before delving into the spoiler-filled bits of Avengers: Endgame, here’s your last chance to stop reading. We’re about to go over some major plot-points of the two Marvel films, so if you haven’t seen either yet, you may want to skip over this article.

Warning! Spoilers for Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame follow. Read on at your own discretion.

Fans who’ve been keeping up with the latest episodes of Marvel’s Cloak And Dagger know that the snaps from Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame didn’t affect New Orleans. Tandy (Olivia Holt) and Tyrone (Aubrey Joseph) have been living their crazy lives as one would expect they’ve yet to make any mention of people mysteriously vanishing like the characters in Infinity War. Because of that, we’re starting to think that maybe Cloak And Dagger doesn’t exist within the main continuity after all.

The reason we’ve come to this conclusion is that Avengers: Endgame opened our minds to the possibility of alternate timelines in the MCU. The writing and creative team on Endgame didn’t make the rules of time-travel especially clear but the one thing we can confirm is that people traveling to the past creates parallel universes. The Ancient One (Tilda Swinton) alludes to this aspect briefly in Endgame.

How this theory relates to Marvel’s Cloak And Dagger is that the alternate timeline theory would explain why they haven’t felt Thanos’ snap. I mean, if the heroes that comprise this show have no idea that half of Earth’s population vanished, it probably didn’t happen. And if that’s the case, Tandy, Tyrone, and the rest of their friends in New Orleans likely reside in an alternate timeline—one that’s part of the MCU—but not in the prime universe.

Assuming that’s the case, only time-travelers will be able to access the separate universes within the MarvelTV universe—with the exception of Disney Plus’ upcoming spinoffs since they’ll take place post-Endgame.

Additionally, characters from Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Runaways can’t appear on Cloak And Dagger unless someone opens a dimensional gate into their timeline—or universe—however you want to look at it. Keep in mind that it’s not unheard of for Marvel characters to hop between dimensions, evidenced by Doctor Strange and Robbie Reyes’ (Gabriel Luna) arc on Season 4 of Agents Of SHIELD. Therefore, the potential for future crossovers still exists.

Our guess is that Nico Minoru will open a dimensional rift—whether by accident or not—drawing Tandy and Tyrone into their universe. The same can be said about Daisy Johnson’s (Chloe Bennet) troupe of SHIELD Agents but their upcoming season is heading in a different direction. Of course, a one-time crossover could happen midway into the season.

Gemma (Elizabeth Henstridge) and Leo Fitz (Iain De Caestecker) always seem to be on the brink of new technological breakthroughs, and with them seeing into the future’s possible advancements, they could return to experimentations. Perhaps they’ll look into the Monolith again—or maybe Fitz and Simmons will revisit the gateway created for Robbie Reyes.

Aida and Dr. Radcliffe were the ones who constructed the portal but Gemma and Fitz could make it more versatile in application. Reyes used the inter-dimensional portal to enter the Hell Dimension but it may become like the device used at the end of Avengers: Endgame. Tony Stark coined the device a time machine but considering how the portal sent Steve Rogers to an alternate timeline, it’s arguably more of a dimensional gateway than a time machine.

The point is that Agent Johnson’s team could access Cloak And Dagger’s universe via an inter-dimensional portal. Who knows, Gemma may create a time machine of her own to rescue Fitz before his untimely death.

For anyone who doesn’t remember, Fitz died in the Season 5 Finale of Agents Of SHIELD. The teases for Season 6, however, show him back in some incarnation. This could be due to Gemma time-traveling, though it’s much likelier that the SHIELD crew will search for the frozen Fitz still floating around in space. He’s on his way to 2091 but the season six teases so far suggest he’s pulled from his sleep early.

Only time will tell if a crossover is, in fact, in the cards, but opening a dimensional rift between universes seems like the ideal way to explain how characters are able to travel from TV show to TV show. The Flash and Supergirl exist in a completely different comic-book universe but they’ve successfully crossed into each other’s stomping grounds via dimensional travel. Marvel should consider using that route to establish a direct connection between Cloak And Dagger and the prime universe where Avengers: Endgame left off because it’s the easiest way to explain how these separate casts can coexist.
