ABC’s Whiskey Cavalier: Should fans give the show another chance?

Ratings for ABC’s Whiskey Cavalier are down but does the show deserve to continue on?

While the show might not be a huge hit for ABC, Whiskey Cavalier hasn’t failed to impress. We’ll admit that the first few episodes struggled to find their footing but the latest episode showed entitled “Confessions Of A Dangerous Mind” delivered an otherworldly amount of character development—enough that ABC should reconsider keeping the series around.

Nothing official has been announced but since ratings have seen a steep decline from week-to-week, it’s only a matter of time before Whiskey Cavalier gets the big ugly ax. And while that’s a reality we have to accept, the show could still live on.

After the latest episode cemented each character into the ongoing plot, it gave us a reason to keep watching. You have to truly become invested in the first seven episodes to understand why “Confessions Of A Dangerous Mind” is so important but it’s well worth the time invested.

To sum it up quickly, the show revolves around a group of government agents who get thrown onto a clandestine team that works outside the confines of their own government jurisdictions. The group is obviously uncomfortable with the arrangement, though it doesn’t take long for them to grow on each other—most of all Will Chase (Scott Foley) and Frankie Trowbridge (Lauren Cohan).

Frankie and Will haven’t had the easiest time getting to know each other but they’ve definitely grown accustomed to the other’s quirks. The same can also be said of Jai (Vir Das), Standish (Tyler James Williams), Susan (Ana Ortiz), and Ray (Josh Hopkins), the supporting members of their team.

In “Confessions Of A Dangerous Mind”, each of them gets an opportunity to shine wherein they show exactly how much they’ve developed over the past eight episodes. Standish locates the mole inside of the Hive—putting an end to Todd, Susan got to analyze Ollerman (Dylan Walsh) for any hints at The Trust’s grand plans, and Ray finally got the opportunity to do something heroic.

The reason why this particular episode is so important is that it establishes Whiskey Cavalier, just like other flailing series has in the past. Not every TV show is immediately successful and we have to remember there’s always a chance things can turn around.

The character growth in “Confessions Of A Dangerous Mind” is a good example of how things change because it developed all these characters’ stories so well that we’re eager to learn where they’re headed next—as any good television show does.

Hopefully, ABC sees the same potential we do and considers keeping Whiskey Cavalier around. Canceling the series now might also be a wasted opportunity as a cross-promotion with AMC’s The Walking Dead.

Since Lauren Cohan has told multiple outlets, including Collider,  that she’s not done with The Walking Dead, her potential return to that show would shine an equal spotlight on her Whiskey Cavalier role. That, in turn, would trigger a surge of fans to follow the ABC series.

Because of that factor, ABC should consider keeping Whiskey Cavalier alive for another season. As long as the network can convince Cohan to shoot her Walking Dead scenes back-to-back with the second season of Whiskey Cavalier, the cross-promotion chances would be immense. Keep in mind that all this would require Cohan be invested enough in both shows.

Regardless of what may or may not be, fans should hold out hope that ABC will give Whiskey Cavalier the chance to prove naysayers wrong. The network has gone out on a limb for less-appealing shows in the past, the discussion should be no different this time around.
