The recent season finale of Fox’s The Passage left us with a number of cliffhangers. How will all these subplots be resolved in season two?

It may not be the biggest hit but Fox’s The Passage has become increasingly better with each passing episode. Not everyone is sold on the vampire series but The Passage is definitely making an impression on those of us invested in the show, especially after that intense season finale.

Warning! Spoilers for season one of Fox’s The Passage follow. You’ve been warned.

During the season finale, a lot happened. Clark Richards (Vincent Piazza), for instance, wound up in a precarious situation. He attempted to help Brad Wolgast (Mark-Paul Gosselaar) and Amy (Saniyya Sidney) escape from the collapsing Project Noah facility but was fatally wounded after being flung into a tree.

Richards appeared to be reaching the end of his rope when Shauna Babcock (Brianne Howey) returned. It looked as though she’d suck the last bit of life from Richards but she doesn’t. Instead, Shauna offers Richards a second chance. He assumes it has to be as a Viral but that’s not the case.

A look thirty days into the future reveals that Shauna was able to heal Richards without completely infecting him. How she accomplishes this feat is unknown but Clark Richards seems fine. Keep in mind that Richards’ condition could change as time passes.

  • What will Clark Richards and Shauna Babcock do now that they’re together?

The final scene involving Babcock and Richards depicts them in a deep embrace, immediately following their decision to leave the apocalyptic fight behind. The question is: will Richards actually run off with Shauna Babcock or will he stay and fight for humanity?

Another major cliffhanger left unresolved involves Brad Wolgast. He was infected by a Viral during the season finale’s last segment, raising a level of concern for his future. Amy gave her caretaker the last remaining antiviral vaccine, granting him a level of immunity to the contagion.

  • Where did Brad Wolgast go after receiving the antiviral vaccine?

What’s strange is that Brad disappears shortly after. Dialogue from Amy in the future confirms that her hundred-year search for Brad was useless. She can sense that he’s still alive but Amy is unable to pinpoint his location. This raises an important question—where has her surrogate father been all this time?

Regardless of what Amy did to save him, Brad wouldn’t turn his back on her. Something must have happened to prevent them from reuniting. That factor is up for debate but perhaps the government discovered Brad’s immunity and captured him as a subject for experimentation. Or, maybe Fanning (Jamie McShane) had one of his children kidnap Brad early on into the apocalypse. Either way, the Agent’s absence needs to be addressed in Season Two.

  • What happened to Lila on her journey to the CDC?

In addition to Brad’s whereabouts, Lila (Emmanuelle Chiriqui) is also unaccounted for. She’s not alongside Amy in the future but most likely survived the Vampire apocalypse too.

Since Lila was given the antiviral vaccine as well, she probably hasn’t aged very much. It’s also distinctly possible that Lila’s immunity helped her survive the hundred-year war—we just don’t know where she’s been all this time.

The last character fans are wondering about is Dr. Lear (Henry Ian Cusick). He injected himself with a prototype antiviral vaccine before the season finale’s conclusion but the episode didn’t reveal what happened. We don’t know if Lear turned, became some sort of Hybrid, or just died from the reckless move.

  • Has Dr. Lear become a mindless Viral monster like Tim Fanning?

Whatever happened, it seems as though Dr. Lear’s attempts to stop the Vampire apocalypse were for naught. We can see the world is really dark a hundred years in the future so there’s a good chance that Lear became a rabid monster. Of course, a turned Dr. Lear may be the one who nearly kills Fanning.

The glimpse Amy receives of the future shows her helping Fanning rather than putting a permanent end to the dastardly villain The move is surprising but what’s more interesting is who put Fanning there. If Amy didn’t bring Fanning to the brink of death, who did?
