ABC: Videos After Dark’s Bob Saget revives a long-forgotten staple of television
By Paul Zuniga
Bob Saget recently made his return to television whilst hosting his new clip show, Videos After Dark. Check out our recap of the premiere below.
Let’s just come out and say it, America’s Funniest Home Videos was never the same after Bob Saget left the show. The show remained around long after Saget stepped down but it failed to excite us the way Saget did with his particular brand of humor. Fortunately, he’s back and hosting Videos After Dark—on ABC no less—where he gets to add his strangely mesmerizing commentary to clips that would normally be vaguely entertaining.
On Videos After Dark, the subject matter is exactly what you’d expect of a show with such a title. Most of the videos have at least one blurred image or word bleeped out so that gives you an idea of what to expect. It’s not catered to everyone but if you’ve enjoyed Bob Saget’s comedy over the years, Videos After Dark is definitely one you’ll want to check out.
In the first episode, Saget introduces the audience to his show and it’s essentially a reboot of AFHV. The two shows are in no way identical but Bob Saget hosting a clip show seemed oddly reminiscent of his former comedy series. That being said, Saget’s new project is a little more risque in its subject matter. Take the first video for example.
The first clip shown is of a baby eating something he found in a diaper. Visibly shocked, the child’s father assumes he’s gathered a chocolaty treat from a terrible place. It seems horrible until the young boy’s mother interrupts and reveals that she placed a piece of fudge in the diaper.
Further segments feature videos of a similar nature. Some are grouped by specific themes but a wide variety of random one-shots keeps the audience on their toes. Just be prepared for a lot blurred out images of nude people in every episode.
