Brooklyn Nine-Nine Season 6 reveals new details about Amy’s past
By Paul Zuniga
The current season of Brooklyn Nine-Nine has spread its focus among the ensemble cast but one character’s backstory revealed some interesting details. Find out more in our recap below.
Warning! Spoilers for the latest episodes of Brooklyn Nine-Nine follow. You’ve been warned.
In last week’s episode of NBC’s Brooklyn Nine-Nine, fans learned exactly why Amy Santiago (Melissa Fumero) moved to the 99th Precinct. It turned out to be because of a predatory precinct Captain who expected to receive sexual favors from Amy in exchange for promoting her to detective.
While unfortunate, Amy being preyed on landed her at the Nine-Nine so everything worked out for the best. She still endured a traumatizing event, but in doing so, Amy was introduced to her future husband—and the people she’d call family soon thereafter.
On the latest episode “The Golden Child”, audiences got to learn more about Amy’s biological family. We’d already been introduced to her parents but her siblings were left out of the conversation and for good reason.
Early on into the episode, Amy explains that she doesn’t talk about her brothers because one of them is better than her. David (Lin-Manuel Miranda), the supposed golden child of the Santiago family, has upstaged Amy at every turn. She hates bringing him up and holds a fair level of contempt towards him.
When they finally meet, it’s clear that Amy wasn’t exaggerating. David gloats about all of his accomplishments and even rubs his glory in Amy’s face. Then to add insult to injury, David pretends to open up to his sister when he’s actually working on an undercover sting of a criminal organization.
As infuriating as this must be, Amy manages to place her differences aside for her brother’s sake. The charges levied against David are serious and the only way to have them dropped is to prove his innocence. Jake (Andy Samberg) and Amy then work to solve the case.
It doesn’t take the Peraltiagos long to solve the case, especially with David working alongside them, but they run into a bit of a snag.
During their sting of the Brazilian night-club where the drug dealers work, Jake is taken captive. He’s placed in an SUV but is miraculously saved by David shooting out the vehicle’s tires. Jake is rescued and the family celebrates.
The episode inevitably ends with the Santiagos hashing things out but that doesn’t mean audiences won’t get to meet the rest of Amy’s family. There are still six other Santiago brothers who we haven’t met. The question is: how will the rest of Amy’s siblings crop up in the current storyline?
